Fall Meeting Of The Steuben County Historical Society On October 22 35 members of the Society met at the United Methodist Church in Greenwood . A delicious luncheon was prepared by members of the Greenwood Historical Society And after the regular business meeting with Vice President Richard Hamilton presiding, Ms. Harriet Redman presented a slide and talk show, "Footprints in Greenwood's Sands of Time" that recounted Greenwood's history from 1816 to 1986.Historic quilts and old toys were also exhibited by members of the Greenwood Society. Here are some of the highlight of Ms. Redman's presentation: In 1816 the Bath Land Office completed its road to the salt springs in the region now known as Greenwood town. By 1822, Alexander Stephens's mill was in operation. By l825, Levi Davis had finished his log house, and had brought his family to live there. Also in 1825 Kreusen's Inn was in operation. The Universalist church was built in 1852, the Methodist Episcopal and Christian churches were built in 1876 and the Roman Catholic church was built in 1877. It was used continuously until 1981 when the spire was struck by lightning and the church burned. The Church of Latter Day Saints built in 1901. In 1895 the first telephone came to Greenwood and in 1896 the New York Pennsylvania Railroad connected the town to the Erie Railroad at Canisteo. The fare to Canisteo was 42 cents. The depot has become the Agway store but there is no trace of the tracks. In 1897the Opera House and most of the business district burned and the town records were lost. Today Greenwood is a pleasant rural community of small villages nestled in rolling hills with open valleys between. CLR Blog | Site Map | Contact CLR |
