Tales from the North Countryat HammondsportCarol KlepackCasting his spell over the 45 people assembled at the Curtiss Museum last Friday, The Adirondack Storyteller moved from a spooky ghost story to a moving tale of a doe and her fawn. He finished with a delightfully humorous, down home story about what happens when an opinionated, persnickity relative comes to visit. John Vinton has made a specialty of tales from the Adirondacks, drawing on authors from all corners of that region. Currently on a three week tour of Southern Tier libraries funded by a special grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, he has performed extensively throughout the state. Guests at Adirondack lodges are frequently treated to his stories. Generations of children have recognized the special feeling that a story, well told, creates. But rarely do we adults stop to listen during our headlong rush through each day. John Vinton helps us to recapture that wonderful feeling from childhood as he weaves his magic with accurate and unaffected use of dialect. Restrained gestures call attention to important points, and help convey unspoken messages. His voice is a finely crafted instrument, evoking a world different from our own but yet familiar. —Carol Klepack, President of the Library Board, Hammondsport Library CLR Blog | Site Map | Contact CLR |
