Grove Spring House

Its Location and its Attractions As A Summer Resort

Hammondsport Herald, April 28, 1874

This fine hotel situated on the eastern shore of LAKE KEUKA ("Crooked Lake"), near Hammondsport, Steuben Co., N.Y., will be opened for the season of 1874, on or about the first of June. The experience of the past five seasons has demonstrated the fact that the Grove Spring House and Lake Keuka, as a "Summer Resort" are appreciated, and that they are patronized by a large and unexceptionable class of pleasure seekers.

In the future, as in the past, no pains will be spared to render the House and the surroundings attractive to all lovers of good substantial pleasure and enjoyment. While we would be glad to see the faces of all guests, with their families, who have patronized the house during the last five years, we will be pleased to welcome many new faces, assuring them of equal hospitality.

AS TO LOCATION

It is siturated on the east shore of Lake Keuka-—six miles from Hammondsport, which is at the head of the lake; 16 miles from Penn Yan (at the foot of east branch); 9 miles from Branchport (at the foot of west branch); 2 miles from Bluff Point, and in full view thereof,—and 4 miles from Barrington Falls. Visitors can approach this hotel from almost every point of the compasss. (See Railroad Guide below.)

ATTRACTIONS, SURROUNDINGS, AND INDUCEMENTS:

1st. Pure air, pure, clear water, healthful climate (No fogs, no mosquitos.)

2d. Its close proximity to the celebrated Vineyards and Wine Vaults of the Urbana and Pleasant Valley Wine Companies. In full view of, and in the middle of, the entire Grape Region—the "vineclad hills" meeting the eye in every direction. An opportunity is here afforded for observing the process of Vine Dressing, Wine Making, Grape Growing and Box Manufacturing, which has been brought so nearly to perfection in this locality.

3d. Its facilities for boating, fishing, driving, bathings and rambling.

4th. The Lake Shore Scenery, which is unsurpassed in America.

5th. The Mineral Springs on the premises: all of which combine to make this one of the most romantic, picturesque, attractive and desirable of "Summer Resorts."

Lake Keuka is about 22 miles long; its greatest breadth is 1 1/2 miles. Its surface is 487 feet abore the level of Lake Ontario—that is, 718 feet above the level of the Atlantic. The outlet, which flows into Seneca Lake, has a descent of 217 feet in about 7 miles.

The Lake abounds in Salmon Trout, Pickerell, Black and Strawberry Bass, Perch, White-fish, etc., and every facility will be afforded to those who desire to indulge in the healthful and cultivating sport of fishing. Boats, fishing tackle, bait, &c., &c., can at all times be procured by leaving word with the clerk at the office.

The waters of the Springs above mentioned belong to the class of Chalybeate waters. They have been analysed and found to contain Sulphuric Acid, Soda, Potassa, Sulphate of Lime, Chlorine, Hydro-Sulphuric Acid, Magnesia, Carbonate of Lime, Sesquioxide of Iron, Carbonic Acid, and Silicic Acid.

The table will be supplied with the best the market can afford; efficient and attentive servants will be in attendance; and no pains will be spared to render all comfortable who make this House their home.

In the beautiful grove surrounding the hotel are Summers Houses, and a Pavilion for the accommodation of guests.

There is ample stable room, and those who bring their private horses and carriages can have them properly housed and cared for. The drives in the vicinity are fine, and the roads are in good condition.

Further particulars, terms, &c., can be obtained at the Hotel, or by addressing.

STEPHEN MOORE,

Hammondsport, N. Y.
