The Steuben County Hall of FameLaura Houghton, F. Howard Hurlbut, and Orson Squire FowlerThe Steuben County Legislature and the Corning-Painted Post Historical Society jointly sponsor the Hall of Fame to honor individuals who have earned distinction for their achievement or service. Since 1976, 57 people have been inducted into the Hall of Fame. Members of the Hall of Fame Selection Committee are: John E. Clifford, chairman; Charles Oliver; Robert Dwyer; Thomas Dimitroff; Joseph Kane; Helen Karr; Twila Brotzman; W. Merle Wheaton; Lillian Adams; and Gloriette Kingsley. This year's Hall of Fame nominations have far exceeded other year's in the number of new persons nominated. Many of them were prepared and submitted by the school children of the county. For the first time in the Hall of Fame's 13 year history, a five-way tie was encountered and a run-off vote was necessary to determine the three persons to be inducted. New nominations received this year were: Donald Davidson, Canisteo; F. Howard Hurlbut, Arkport; C. LeRoy Hurlbut, Wayland; Charles R. McGrady, Corning; Alice Tully, Corning; Janet Richardson, Painted Post; James J. O'Hara, Corning; Helen T. Werner, Corning; Marion "Sam" Stratton, Bath; John Reed, Bradford; Edwin S. Underhill, Jr., Corning; C. Arthur Niver, Hammondsport; Lorenzo Fowler, Cohocton; Charlotte Fowler Wells, Cohocton; John Hess, Wayland; Dr. George M Peabody, Wayland; Eleanor Rutledge, Corning; and Carol McConnell of Prattsburgh. In addition to the new nominations the selection committee had over two hundred persons that had been nominated in other years to choose from. "No easy task" was the opinion of most of the committee members. Orson Squire FowlerOrson Fowler lived from 1809 until 1887.
