Joseph J. Kane

Joseph J. Kane, Sr. died Tuesday, September 2, 1997. He was born October 27, 1913, in the town of Erwin, the son of Thomas F. and Hannah Troy Kane.

Joe Kane graduated from Addison High School and served as a flight engineer in the U. S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946. He and Evelyn McCarthy were married in 1946. They had a daughter and four sons. In 1978 he retired after 40 years with Ingersoll Rand Co.

Joe Kane was always active in community affairs. He was an avid gardener who spent much time with his flower and vegetable gardens. He was Historian for the Town of Erwin, Curator for the Town of Erwin Museum, and a long-time member of the Steuben County Hall of Fame Committee.

Several of Joe Kane's stories have been published in the Crooked Lake Review. His "Joe Kane Remembers the Flood of 1972 in Painted Post" appeared in issue #51, and his "Joe Kane Recalls the Flood of July 8, 1935" was in # 88. Joe's story of his early school years in Erwin appeared in issue #106.
